Judo in Anime and Manga: Masahiko Kimura's Training

There aren't as many main characters in manga with judo backgrounds. There's Yawara (which is pretty awesome), but other than that, I've not come across too many judo manga. There are some judoka in Grappler Baki, Shamo, Holyland, and History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi; however, the judo players in these manga were secondary characters and are often taken out relatively early in whatever fight they are in. Poor Ukita in HSDK just gets the raw end of just about every deal he's involved in.

I mean, just look at the poor bastard.

I think this is unfair. Judo is badass.

Look at current UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey-- she's 11-0 in professional MMA and won a Bronze Medal in Judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Judo is the precursor to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Helio Gracie, the founder of BJJ, was beaten by a judo player. However, to be fair, it took the one of the greatest fighters, if not the greatest fighter, in the world at that time: Masahiko Kimura, to accomplish that feat. This man was ridiculous. His philosophy was that if he put more effort into his training than his opponents, he would be victorious-- he did... and he was. Kimura will be the basis for this workout.

So, this workout is dedicated to all the judoka who've been overlooked. This is for you guys!

Masahiko Kimura's Training

  1. 1,000 Push-ups or Hindu Push-ups
  2. Bunny Hop- 1 km
  3. Headstand- 3 x 3 Minutes
  4. Judo Practice- 100 Throws
  5. One-Arm Barbell Lift and Press- 15 Reps each side OR Bench Press- 3 Sets: 3, 2, and 1 Reps
  6. 200 Sit-ups off Partner's Back or Decline Sit-ups
  7. 200 Squats with Partner/Log/Barbell/Sandbag (150-200lbs)
  8. Judo Practice- 100 Submissions
  9. 500 Shuto (Knife-hand Strikes)
  10. Judo Practice- 100 Entries
  11. Judo Randori- "X" x 3 Minute Rounds
  12. Practice Throws (particularly Uchi-mata) Against a Tree- 1 Hour
  13. Additional Judo Practice- 1 Hour

Notes:

  • This is a day workout and can be broken up throughout the day as needed.
  • The 1,000 push-ups can be in any number of sets and reps.
  • Bunny Hopping a kilometer will be pretty rough, so rest as needed during it.
  • Do the headstand against a wall or with a partner. Also, you should use a mat or a large folded towel. If you can't do the full 3 minutes, you can rest and do it in sets, but try to do the full time.
  • Examples of Judo Throws: Animated, Video/Pictures, Animated, and Video. Needless to say, you'll need a partner for this.
  • The One-Arm Barbell Lift and Press can be a single-arm Clean and Press, a deadlift followed by a curl followed by a press, or it even be a snatch (I know there is not a press in the snatch, but whatever.) Here are some examples: 1, 2, and 3 (content warning on this one!). Start off light and really focus on the form here.
  • The bench press is here so that you can occasionally focus on some heavier upper body lifting.
  • The sit-ups off a partner's back will require a partner (no crap!) to be on all fours. You will sit with your butt across their shoulders and your legs wrapped around their body. You will do sit-ups from this position, but obviously be careful, since you'll be laying back over your partner's head. Alternatively, and possibly better, you can just do decline sit-ups.
  • This is a lot of squats with a lot of weight. What I'm going to suggest is to pick whatever weight you are going to squat with and just squat it as many times as you can. You can do it in whatever sets and reps you need to, but the eventual goal is to be able to do a 150-200lb squat 200 times without stopping. (Mind you, I did say eventually.) To keep from getting bored, it might be fun to switch it up and occasionally use a partner or a barbell or a log or a sandbag. Each will offer their own challenges and tax your body in a different way.
  • In case you didn't know, judo is not just throws. It has submissions, too. Unfortunately, due to the rules in judo, you don't get to see them as much. However, if you think about it, BJJ is essentially just judo with a crap-ton of newaza (ground techniques) in it. Check out some newaza here and pay attention to shimewaza (chokes) and kansetsuwaza (joint locks). Here's also a video. You're just practicing the techniques here, so you're going to need a partner.
  • Kimura was also known to practice some Karate, especially the shuto or knife hand strike. You can just do it in the air or against a target. It's 500 total strikes, so 250 on each side.
  • Entering means just practicing the footwork before a throw, like the spin for a hip throw or the leg set up for an Uchi-mata. For example, this video here.
  • Judo Randori is essentially just sparring. You're going for a decisive throw, a 25 second pin, or a submission. Old school example and new school. Do it for as long as you like, but do it for at least 3 minutes.
  • Kimura would often go into the forest late at night and practice his throws against a tree, particularly his entering techniques for those throws. Particularly, he would practice Uchi-Mata. Knowing the throw was one thing, but getting into the position to use the move is absolutely essential. That's why there is an additional hour of practice for this.
  • The additional judo practice can be randori, technique practice, or practicing the entering for your throws. Whatever it is, just fill the time slot.
Hope you guys enjoyed this one! You guys have been asking for a judo workout for a while now, so here it is! Until next time, good luck and train hard!

Kimura is not impressed.

Notes:

  • You can do the combinations in the air, on a heavy bag, with a partner holding mitts or pads
  • For the jog, you're just going to get your body moving and loosen up.
  • In the sparring, it's best if you wear gear. You can just box or just kickbox or do mixed sparring.
  • For the wrestling practice, you can use Greco-Roman rules or collegiate. Basically, all we want is to focus on positioning and controlling and throwing. Don't worry about submissions.
  • You don't have to do this all back-to-back. You can, but you don't have to. You can do the first part in the morning and the last part in the evening or vice-versa.

I'm a really big fan of Holyland, so I'm always fond of doing those workouts. Hope you guys enjoy this workout. Between the other three Holyland workouts, you guys should have quite the skill-set developed. I'll post some videos of the techniques at some point if you guys like.

That's all for today. Until next time, good luck and train hard!

Holyland: Kamishiro Yuu's Wrestling Practice

A little further into Holyland, Yuu starts to practice wrestling, although we've yet to see him really apply it in a fight. I'm looking forward to the type of complete fighter that he's starting to become. Hopefully, we'll get to see him use more and more skills as time progresses. In any case, this is a very simple workout. The wrestling should be done in a grassy area or on sand, instead of a mat, to simulate fighting in real-life environments. I wouldn't really practice on anything too hard, especially not at first, because you can really hurt yourself.

Kamishiro Yuu's Wrestling Practice

Practice Shooting (AKA: Penetration Step), no partner- 10 Minutes
Practice Sprawling, with or without partner- 10 Minutes
Practice Wrestling: 30-60 Minutes

Notes:

That's all for today! Until next time, good luck and train hard!

Notes:

Daily Training Update- 12/22/2010

Break
5 Minutes Shadowboxing- Footwork Intensive

Lunch
Real Anime Training Warm-up
Waddle-Walking w/resistance bands
Kamishiro Yuu's Kick Training

Notes:
  • Sliced my finger open yesterday, so probably going to be doing stuff not hand-related for a few days. Damn spagetti sauce cans!
  • Waddle-Walking is probably called something else, but I had a resistance band strapped in between my ankles and, with my feet spread out wide, I squatted down a little and walked forward. I've seen several fighters do this exercise, so I thought I'd give it a try.
  • Kicked a heavy bag (B.O.B.- Body Opponent Bag) for the workout.

You guys are more than welcome to post your daily workouts in the comments of my Daily Training Updates! I would love to see which Real Anime Training Workouts you are doing (if you are doing them) and watch your progress!

Kamishiro Yuu's Kick Training

Since this is a Holyland workout, looks like we're back to lots of repetitions of techniques. Yay! Considering this workout will be centered on kicking, there won't be near as many reps as the punching version. In any cases, so far Yuu has only exhibited the ability to do two kicks-- a roundhouse and a spinning back kick. And those will be the only two we'll cover. You can do them on a heavy bag, with a partner using Thai Pads, or on a tree, like Yuu did... however, he also wrapped the living heck out of his leg in order to do it. Honestly, a heavy bag is sufficient. Remember to check the notes at the bottom.

Level One
-200 Round Kicks (100 Each Side)

Level Two
-400 Round Kicks (200 Each Side)

Level Three
-600 Round Kicks (300 Each Side)
-100 Spinning Back Kicks (50 Each Side)

Level Four
-700 Round Kicks (350 Each Side)
-200 Spinning Back Kicks (100 Each Side)

Level Five
-800 Round Kicks (400 Each Side)
-300 Spinning Back Kicks (150 Each Side)

Level Six
-900 Round Kicks (450 Each Side)
-400 Spinning Back Kicks (200 Each Side)

Level Seven
-1000 Round Kicks (500 Each Side)
-500 Spinning Back Kicks (250 Each Side)

Level Eight
-1000 Round Kicks (500 Each Side)
-650 Spinning Back Kicks (325 Each Side)

Level Nine
-1000 Round Kicks (500 Each Side)
-800 Spinning Back Kicks (400 Each Side)

Level Ten
-1000 Round Kicks (500 Each Side)
-1000 Spinning Back Kicks (500 Each Side)

Notes:
  • You do not have to do all the reps on one side before doing the reps on the other. You can break them into sets of 25, 50, 100 or whatever. I don't really even see the problem of mixing up the round kicks and the spinning back kicks, so you don't get too tired or bored with the same move. Just make sure you keep track of your reps and you do all the ones listed.
  • I understand that this seems a little excessive, but also understand that you aren't doing this workout all the time. However, it is a nice little shocker for your body every now and again when thrown in the mix of the rest of the workouts.
  • The round kicks, at least for being true to the manga, should all be done off the rear leg and should be "turn-kicks." That is to say that if you didn't have a target to hit, your body would spin all the way around. I'll post a few examples of the types of kicks. However, if you want to adapt it to your style and use just a normal roundhouse or split up the roundhouse reps into lead and rear legs, that is entirely up to you.
  • I'll also post videos for the spinning back kick.
  • You should be able to complete your current level of this workout and not be destroyed before advancing to the next level. Use your own judgement, or you can move ahead after three successful completions of your current level (remember that means three separate occasions of using this workout, not three times at once).
  • This workout will help your build strength in these movements and also build the neural pathways required for the proper execution of the techniques.
  • Remember to stretch!
That's our workout. I'll post some videos for it shortly. Until next time, good luck and train hard!

Holyland- Kamishiro Yuu's Basic Training

Holyland is a pretty cool manga. It's about a kid who tries to find a place in the world for himself by roaming the streets at night. However, in order to do so, he has to be strong enough to defend himself from thugs and gangsters. His determination leads him to inadvertently become the "Thug Hunter," as he uses the basic skill he acquired through reading a boxing book and countless hours of practice, to make sure he can stay in his "Holyland."
There's a lot of levels in the workout... it's a slow process of mastery, but it has been said, if you can master just the basics of combat, you can be a great fighter.

Kamishiro Yuu's Basic Training
(Note: Day Workout- These workouts are meant to be done over the course of a whole day.)
(Note 2: Do not advance to next level until you complete your current level 3 times without failing.)

Level 1
-1000 Jabs (500 each side)

Level 2
-30 Push-ups
-2000 Jabs (1,000 each side)

Level 3:
-2 x 30 Push-ups 2 Minutes rest in between sets
-3000 Jabs (1,500 each side)

Level 4:
-3 x 30 Push-ups 2 Minutes rest in between sets
-4000 Jabs (2,000 each side)

Level 5:
-3 x 30 Push-ups 2 Minutes rest in between sets
-5000 Jabs (2,500 each side)

Level 6:
-3 x 30 Push-ups 2 Minutes rest in between sets
-4000 Jabs (2000 each side)
-1000 Jab-Cross (500 each side= 2,000 total punches)

Level 7:
-3 x 30 Push-ups 2 Minutes rest in between sets
-3000 Jabs (1500 each side)
-2000 Jab-Cross (1,000 each side= 4,000 total punches)

Level 8:
-3 x 30 Push-ups 2 Minutes rest in between sets
-2000 Jabs (1000 each side)
-3000 Jab-Cross (1,500 each side= 6,000 total punches)

Level 9:
-3 x 30 Push-ups 2 Minutes rest in between sets
-1000 Jabs (500 each side)
-4000 Jab-Cross (2,000 each side= 8,000 total punches)

Level 10:
-3 x 30 Push-ups 2 Minutes rest in between sets
-5000 Jab-Cross (2,500 each side= 10,000 total punches)

Notes:

  • Alternatively, you can do the Jab-Cross combination from the beginning, so you don't get in the habit of just throwing a single punch. It's still only 1,000 punches per level, so count appropriately.
  • Essentially, on each level, you do a 1,000 punches per level. That may seem like a lot, and it is, but remember that you have all day and the you are starting at level 1. You can do them in sets of 20, 50, 100, or whatever. As long as you get them done, it doesn't matter. You won't be doing this workout every day, it should be interspersed throughout your schedule in between the other workouts.
  • You may be able to complete Levels 1 and 2 in this first three attempts, but after that, you may have some difficulty with the higher number of reps. Also, you shouldn't start your punches until after you've completed your push-ups for the day. This workout may seem a little boring, but once you get into a rhythm, you'll find it's very meditative.

That's all for today. Until next time, good luck and train hard!
